The Polar Bear, Ursus maritimus, largest of the Ursine family, has had many faces and archetypal functions throughout time and across cultures. This talk explores the contrasts between modern day, anglophone fantasy representations of polar bears and how it differs from traditional Inuit perspectives, potentially revealing profoundly different perceptions of the natural world and, indeed, the Arctic. It also asks you to consider the place that polar bears hold in the human imagination.
